Project details
Local (organic) food for school canteens in the Occitanie region (South of France)

Description

  • Project duration: 2018 - 2021
  • Client: Region Occitanie
  • Country or region: France
  • Department(s):
    Supply chains and territories
    Sustainable catering

Project aim:
The regional council in Occitanie has raised the food policy to one of its „major regional tasks in 2018“ and fixed an ambitious objective: in 2021 a 40% share of local or “high quality food” in high schools canteens shall be reached, half of it coming from organic agriculture. 191 schools of 2nd degree as well as 2 central kitchens of the region are concerned.

Activities of ECOZEPT:
In collaboration with Bio Occitanie (Fédération Régionale de l'Agriculture Biologique) we have accompanied the change in practices at the level of establishments in 8 departments (Aveyron, Lozère, Gers, Tarn et Garonne, Haute Garonne, Hérault, Gard, Aude) in order to restructure supplies through regional channels.
Within the framework of this project, we have mobilised our know-how anchored in the operational field and covering a wide range of themes: sustainable procurement, logistics issues, drafting of public contracts, staff training, awareness-raising of guests, communication actions, etc. We have also carried out a sourcing of the offer available in the region and designed several tools to accompany the change (food waste, public markets guide, low temperature cooking guide, vegetarian menu guide, etc.).
More generally, we have taken care to make the link with the obligations of the so-called Egalim law in order to guarantee the consistency of regional actions with the law.

Market potentials of innovative crops in Bavaria

Bavarian agriculture is adapting to changing climatic conditions and consumer habits. The list of crops that can grow under these new conditions is expanding (e.g. lentils, chickpeas, peanuts, sweetcorn, grain millet, buckwheat, quinoa, amaranth, sesame, etc.). The Bavarian State Research Centre for Agriculture (LfL) has set itself the goal of promoting the production of these innovative arable crops by exploring their potential for the production of innovative foods through research and knowledge transfer. In order to calibrate and orientate this support work, the LfL needs an assessment of the market potential.
