Project aim:
With this project, the Hallertau Water Board wants to contribute to the sustainable preservation of high-quality drinking water resources while at the same time safeguarding hop cultivation. The effects of different levels of nitrogen fertilisation on the nitrogen content of the soil and hop yields are being investigated with the aim of reducing nitrate inputs from hops into the drinking water in the Hallertau as far as possible.

Activities of ECOZEPT:
This project is a LEADER cooperation project with the Local Action Groups of the Kelheim and Pfaffenhofen districts, in which water suppliers and hop farmers and the hop industry work together, supported by specialist authorities/institutes.
The effects of 67% versus 100% nitrogen fertilisation are being investigated in hop yards of 10 farms willing to experiment. For this purpose, soil samples are taken in spring and autumn to determine the nitrogen content in the soil and yields are determined on the trial plots in autumn. Ecozept is using the results to work with hop farmers on the development of practical management systems that enable drinking water protection with hop cultivation.
