European research project on biodiversity in the food value chain and on the plate


Project aim:
BIOVALUE - Fork to farm Agent Based simulation tool augmenting BIOdiversity in the agri-food VALUE-chain is a research project supported by the European Union in the framework of the Horizon 2020 program. It aims to analyze the link between genetic diversity, food supply chain, environment, consumer preferences and health in order to increase crop biodiversity.  This project brings together 17 partners in 12 countries. The pilot crops studied are: buckwheat, lentil and peas and beans, tomato, eggplant, cucumber and sow thistle.

Activities of ECOZEPT:
ECOZEPT is responsible for different tasks:
(1) development of a framework for analyzing the impact of food value chains (from farmers to consumers) on cultivated biodiversity (2) assessment of consumer perception. We are also responsible for Work Package 9 on product certification and labelling. We are involved in various other tasks (development of innovative products, cultivation of genetic diversity on pilot sites and improvement of the links between biodiversity and food chains via the BIOVALUE tool).

The aim of the project is to update the guidelines 'More organic in local authorities', which have been in existence since 2017. Ecozept and its partners are adapting the content in line with changes in administrative and funding legislation and are providing up-to-date examples of good practice from different areas of local authority catering.

Animal Welfare

The French administration France Agri Mer wants to support supply chain actors in setting up  an animal welfare scheme for pig and poultry. In order to enrich the debate a comparative analysis of existing schemes in this domain is run in Germany, The Netherlands and in Denmark will be done by Ecozept and partners. Main focus is the microeconomy on farm level and how it might be impacted by restrictions coming from labelling schemes.
